We caught up with Marina Prosdocimo, Buyer for multi-brand resort and ready-to-wear specialist Salt, to discover what autumn has in store for fashion fiends.

Q: How did you get into the industry, and what made you want to become a buyer?

A: I was a buyer for luxury multi-brand jewellery and lingerie before coming to Salt, and before that I was in sales. I actually worked as a planning analyst for Juicy Couture before that, and that’s when I discovered I wanted to become a buyer.

When I first came to Salt almost two-and-a-half years ago, we were a relatively small retailer, but we’ve since grown to incorporate about 50 brands.

Q: What does a typical day entail?

A: Every day is different. I spend some time in the office confirming orders, taking care of admin and writing reports for Stephanie and our operational manager. I might start here, in Elizabeth Street, and then move onto Walton Street in the afternoon. I’ll speak to the sales team to see if we need any replenishment orders, or are expecting new stock. So it varies. I’m always in between the two stores!

Q: What do you enjoy about working on Elizabeth Street?

A: It’s very residential and we have a lot of regular local customers, which is nice because we develop a more personal relationship with them. The street itself is delightful and there are lots of places to go around here. I like the fact that it’s quieter than if I was working in the City.

Q: The Salt edit includes classic brands such as Zimmerman, Juliet Dunn and Mikoh, as well as relative newcomers in resort wear fashion like Marysia. How do you stay on top of new styles and up-and-coming names?

A: I think social media is really good for that these days. It’s definitely one of the best ways to keep on top of what’s trending in different parts of the world. We travel to the US a lot too, and always find lots of interesting brands there. Stephanie has a great eye because she travels a lot. She’s constantly travelling – I don’t know how she does it!

Q: What advice would you give to shoppers looking to create the perfect holiday wardrobe? Are there any ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’?

A: Always experiment with new textures and proportions for swimwear and beachwear. And never team swimwear with a kaftan or dress in the same print.

In terms of ready-to-wear, experiment with prints, colours and different shapes. We have amazing sales teams who find clients the best styles depending on their body shapes. We have a lot of customers that come to our Elizabeth Street store and don’t know what to buy, and the sales team really guides them.

Q: What trends do you predict in ready-to-wear for autumn?

A: Expect a lot of lurex and metallics – we’ve bought into this trend a lot. The bohemian trend is also set to continue – long, flowing dresses are going to be a big trend this autumn and winter. One of our designers, Zimmerman, has really tapped into this. It’s amazing, since we started buying from the label, how many new followers it’s gained.

Q: What can customers expect from Salt in the coming months?

A: We don’t buy a lot of swimwear for the autumn, because fewer people shop for swimwear from September to November. Our next big job is going to be just before Christmas, because a lot of people travel at the end of the year.

We’ve just moved to a new Walton Street store with two floors, and the extra space has allowed us to broaden our offering. The ground floor is going to be mainly ready-to-wear and we’re going to have a selection of resort wear on the first floor.

Q: Which big names should Salt’s customers look out for?

A: We are always looking for new brands. We’ve bought a lot more ready-to-wear items than usual for the coming seasons because the demand is really high.

We think the Israeli label Dodo Bar Or is going to be big. It’s A/W16 collection is pretty amazing. We’ve also bought a lot of great staple pieces from Alexander Wang and Cédric Charlier.
