A gown to remember

We meet ON Motcomb’s Sophie Davies, who tells us all about her love for luxury eveningwear and the things that make this Belgravia boutique so special.

Nestled in the heart of Belgravia on the corner of Motcomb and Kinnerton Street, ON Motcomb is instantly striking due to the beautiful gowns – both real and carefully crafted from large and colourful sheets of card – that grace the window. The shop has been here for almost four years, opening after the founders spotted a gap in the market for an eveningwear boutique stocking multiple brands.

Today, it offers ready-to-wear and couture gowns from Giambattista Valli and Ashi Studio, with top-end designers including Zac Posen, Carolina Herrera, Marchesa, Monique Lhuillier, Naeem Khan, Maticevski and Johanna Ortiz, but the real focus is on the customers.

Up close and personal

“Personal shopping is such a unique experience as you work with the client on an intimate, one-to-one basis,” says Sophie Davies, social media manager and assistant manager. “Usually we will have customers visit us looking for the perfect gown for an upcoming event. Once we feel confident with their individual requirements, we’ll show them through our lookbook of designers, pointing out specific pieces we think they’ll love.” The in-store treatment also involves a tour of the showroom and a sneak peek at the boutique’s most special garments. “We listen to our clients, and I believe as each season evolves, so do their tastes. It’s so important that we buy gowns that they will fall in love with.”

And if they don’t find the perfect fit? “We offer complimentary alterations, or we’ll do our best to source the right size or colour for them for a special order,” says Sophie. “We enjoy working with designers who celebrate all women, and our aim is for each and every client to leave the store feeling beautiful and confident.”

A love for fashion

Sophie has always been interested in fashion – “and there is a certain magic with luxury eveningwear that I have fallen in love with” – but her time at ON Motcomb has provided so much more than an opportunity to enhance her knowledge. “I’ve had the chance to learn the ins and outs of the business. From selecting the right pieces for the right clients, working with our in-house tailors and understanding the materials and thread-work of each individual gown, and developing the ability to advise women and see what works and what doesn’t. What’s great about working for ON Motcomb is that we each have a voice and, no matter your position in the company, we are all heard.”

But it’s the boutique’s distinct focus on unforgettable experiences that provide the real draw. “Because we are a fairly discreet boutique with a small team, we build personal relationships with every client that we deal with, which is rare to find,” she says. As well as ensuring a first class in-store experience, Sophie and the rest of the team keep in constant contact with clientele through WhatsApp and email, sending photographs and videos of garments and the tailoring process to make sure that customers are always catered for, even when abroad or travelling. “We also update our Instagram feed daily, as this is predominantly how clients like to keep up-to-date with our latest collections.”

Coming together

The emphasis on people, too, is one of the things Sophie loves about the local area. “We have a great sense of community here, and Grosvenor really supports that. From the maintenance of the streets to organising local events such as the Motcomb Street party, the support we receive really reinforces our love for the local community and businesses alike,” she says. “It’s also a beautiful area. From the charming local courtyards to the beautiful architecture, I couldn’t think of anywhere in London I would rather work.”
